What about medicines for heartburn?

You can use several types of drugs to treat heartburn. Antacids neutralize acid that the stomach produces. For most people, antacids are available without a prescription (OTC) give fast relief and short term. However, if you use antacids too, they can cause diarrhea or constipation. Search antacids contain both magnesium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide. (One causes constipation while the other causes diarrhea so it is offset). Some brands of antacids include Maalox, Mylanta and Riopan. Follow the package directions.

H2 blockers reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces. Several are available without a prescription.
Other drugs such as omeprazole and lansoprazole also reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces. Metoclopramide reduces acid reflux. To find out which medication is right for you, talk to your doctor.
